To be honest, Chanel doesn’t pay my bills and I’m not a brand fanatic, plus the price is no joke. It’s a lovely white floral: in the bottle it smells of pure gardenia, but once worn, the neroli and jasmine take control, so it’s not just gardenia as I expected. Don’t get me wrong, it smells good, natural and high quality, but it’s just another white floral. Projects strongly at first, then settles on the skin with a earthy touch, and after 4 or 5 hours you need to reapply. Scent 8/10, Sillage 8/10, Longevity 8/10
Luminous gardenia, classic and coquettish without being annoying. Among so many white florals (gardenia, orange blossom, jasmine), the neroli gives it that vintage touch, just like Chanel No. 22, creating a timeless floral. It’s a prepared and decorated gardenia for special occasions you want to remember. An olfactive portrait of the historical gardenia worn by Elizabeth Taylor, Lauren Bacall or Ingrid Bergman. Luminosity thanks to a gardenia touched by expert hands in art and decoration.
Okay, well… This is my favourite perfume so far, I’ve tried quite a few. Yes, it’s very expensive, yes, it’s soft, yes, it doesn’t last long, yes, it’s wonderful. You can’t have it all, nothing is perfect. Chanel Gardenia is elegant, luxurious, yet soft and innocent. I smell fresh and beautiful gardenia all the time, until the base arrives and the coconut makes it creamier. I love that the neroli is secondary here, because in other perfumes it usually dominates. In this one, it just helps the gardenia stand out and lead. On me it lasts a good 6 hours with moderate sillage. It’s feminine, elegant, beautiful and very true to itself.
Chanel Gardenia is basically gardenia and jasmine (oh, that note that’s overused; every time I read it has jasmine, I pray it doesn’t dominate everything). The other notes are very in the background. I like gardenia, but I prefer it in a better orchestrated and balanced setting, like in Belle d’Opium, where it works alongside a personality-driven patchouli. According to Fragrantica, this fragrance was born in 1925, so I calculate I’ve tested a reformulation, which is why I find it simplistic. Longevity is moderate, almost weak. Scent: 5/10, Sillage: 4.5/10, Longevity: 5/10, Versatility: 7/10
This is the perfume where I felt the most natural and beautiful gardenia. It comes across as a very beautiful floral, but the flaw was its longevity: half an hour 🙁 Still, I’d like to own it someday.
