I’ll use analogies because this is a very peculiar scent. The opening is a punch of prominent oud, slightly faecal but wearable and even addictive, reminiscent of Al Khatt by Xerjoff. Ten minutes in, the party begins: rough, smoking, incandescent leather. It’s a leather profile like Falcon Leather with smoky notes and a sweet base, probably praline, but nothing gourmand, just a subtle touch. A wonderful discovery; I’ve already bought the bottle. Longevity is excellent. One of Guerlain’s finest, perhaps my favourite from the entire line. Test before you buy, it’s complex. 9.5/10.
Total disappointment. I was expecting something more niche and potent, but I suppose that’s on me for choosing Guerlain. It doesn’t smell like natural oud; rather, it’s a synthetic blend of leather and oud that reminds me terribly of Dior’s Leather Oud (which I hate for being artificial and indistinct). Add some pinky aldehydes to that, and it becomes far more feminine than I anticipated. Picture a Leather Oud with aldehydes; that’s roughly what it smells like. Nothing like the original.
Reminds me of the smell of a McDonald’s burger.
Controversial: you either hate it or love it, no middle ground. It starts animal and smoky, between leather and an oud I highly doubt is actually there, before brightening into something soapy like old chypres. It blends the dirty animal side with the clean soap and works brilliantly. It’s like cleaning your pet, a Vietnamese pig with expensive, refined French soap. The trail is noticeable from several metres away yet doesn’t feel heavy; the further you go, the more the soapy-floral note emerges, while up close it smells of smoky leather and animal. It’s as if distance blurs and ‘cleans’ it, a lovely and curious effect: anyone who smells it will notice. Some detect pickled herring and I understand why; at times it did seem like that. It suits summer, it’s not a beast but it holds up, light in the Guerlain style. Elegant and refined, but not for everyone. Despite the name, don’t expect miracles.
