It’s an olfactory show. I wore it all winter long. What a beast: you go crazy wearing it, it moves with you, accompanies you, and keeps you warm. Creamy sandalwood, a touch of incense, something dry, elegant woody rose, a bit dirty and accorded, with other flowers. It’s addictive, elegant, enigmatic, well-constructed, and singular. Ideal for fresh or cloudy days, with that sun warming against the cold. A marvel, try it.
Guerlain’s Santal Royal is woody, floral, and spiced. Built on a base of sandalwood, rose, incense, and smoky oud wood. It doesn’t change much; it smells the same at the start as it does at the end. The sandalwood is well-crafted, drier than in others, but pleasant thanks to the smoky notes. It’s for enjoying, night outings, or special events, though some might wear it daily. Best in autumn and winter. Lasted over 8 hours, with good projection for the first hour and a half, then a close bubble. It’s unisex; I imagine both men and women wearing it. Try it and share your thoughts.
I tested the new version six times in the perfumery, with nothing else on. It is NOT the same as the Les Absolus d’Orient collection: they removed the fruity and sweet elements, boosted the oud (it smells like leather), jasmine, and rose; sometimes it smells like Ombre Nomade. In the dry-down, there’s lots of ambroxan, the sandalwood is drier and more robust, and that jasmine or hedione remains strong. I used the previous one for parties or casual outings; I can’t do this one anymore. It has become more formal and feminine, losing that mystical and super-sensual feel.
