Geza Schoen is a German perfumer known for his avant-garde and unconventional approach to fragrance creation. He was born in Kassel, Germany, and grew up in a creative and enriching environment, as his father was an art professor and his mother a kindergarten teacher. Geza’s interest in perfumery began while he was studying Chemistry at the University of Heidelberg. After graduating, he began his formal training in perfumery at Haarmann & Riemer (now Symrise), where he learned the art and science of creating fragrances. Geza’s passion for perfumery has led him to collaborate with various brands and artists, such as Diesel, Ormonde Jayne, FCUK, Boudicca and Anat Fritz, to name a few. He is best known for his brand, Escentric Molecules, launched in 2006. The brand highlights individual aromatic molecules with the glow and depth of character needed to stand on their own. This approach represents a departure from traditional perfumery, which uses a blend of several ingredients to create a fragrance. Geza has received numerous awards for his exceptional work in the fragrance industry. In 2016, he received the Outstanding Artist Award for Interdisciplinarity; in 2017, he received the Sadakichi Award for Experimental Work with Scent and Wolfgang Georgsdorf for “Osmodrama / Smeller 2.0”. Geza’s unique approach to perfumery has attracted a cult following and earned him a reputation as a rock star of niche perfumes. His work is characterised by a willingness to work with cutting-edge synthetic ingredients and big ideas that challenge the rules of traditional perfumery. Geza’s passion for natural ingredients, his admiration for perfumery of the 1980s and 1990s, and his disdain for most of the new “niche” perfumes have made him an iconoclastic figure in the world of fragrance.
