It’s understandable that a burning, spicy perfume needs a powerful image, but turning Marilyn’s iconic number into an R&B Christmas anthem for Beyoncé to contort herself shaking her hips is too much. My relationship with this started badly: the atomiser was as faulty as a fairground shotgun. When I pressed it, instead of a spray, a smear leaked out, accompanied by a tickle in the nose that wiped out any preconceived notion: pink pepper. No one explains why a musk-dominated fragrance featuring pepper, synthetic rose, and woods ended up being called ‘Diamonds’. It’s a mystery as baffling as Hemingway’s snow leopard. Armani Diamonds eau de toilette is as tacky and kitsch as the baubles on a Burmese Christmas tree where you might find a surprise egg or a tropical pineapple. The scent is like a firework shop bomb that, when it bursts against the linoleum, releases a cloud of pepper to make you sneeze. Then the Chinese salesman wipes it with a cloth soaked in Beijing rosehip and—zap!—you have the Armani Diamonds. In this Emporio Armani misfire, nothing is in its place: not the name, not the illuminati Afro-American spot, not the pepper seasoning, nor the bazaar Chinese packaging. A disaster fit for strict followers of Innocents’ Day.
Years ago, in my twenties, tired of the cloying and loud perfumes of the time, I tried this one for its glamorous bottle featuring Beyoncé as the muse. 😂 At first, it was fresh and spicy from the pink pepper (which didn’t quite convince me, but it passed quickly), followed by a slightly powdery yet lovely rose. What really hooked me was the dry-down: a mysterious vetiver and a fine, seductive musk, which I believe is the star and what made me buy it. 😎 In short, it’s a fresh fragrance with spicy and musky notes, youthful but with that clean, soapy touch that always works well. The trail is moderate and lasts about eight hours. I give it 8.5/10 because it’s a bit pricey, but if you’re looking for something fresh, original, and tasteful, it’s an option you should try. ✅
