If you like Tom Ford’s Ombre Leather this will become your new favourite. The structure is almost identical; they simply swap the leather for a potent oud. They share the same character the same vibe and the same motifs.
It’s a serious fragrance with a very unusual and unconventional opening. The oud and saffron are very prominent with a citrus touch of orange and pepper. Watch out don’t buy blindly like I did; my nose is accustomed to niche scents and I was disappointed but for newcomers to this world it can be confusing. If you’re the type who wants to smell everything it’s an exception.
It reminds me of Terre d’Hermès: citrusy earthy and I liked the scent. However I expected something more purposeful and daring like Oud Ispahan. Rating: 8 out of 10.
Purple Oud by Dior is the freshest and most woody of its oud line. It opens with a citrusy, slightly bitter orange, accompanied by an oud that smells of wood and vetiver. After a few minutes, the orange gives way to saffron, which imparts a leather-like sensation, while a light hint of pepper lingers in the background. The oud dominates the fragrance’s entire evolution. It is an elegant, characterful composition; although it vibrates like others, it remains unique. The orange is bright and energising against a heavy, smoky, dark oud (never animalic, but rather mineral). The contrast between the two is excellent and they enhance each other. It evokes a dark, green forest on a cloudy day. It lasts five to six hours with moderate projection in the first two.
Purple Oud alongside Oud Rosewood and Oud Ispahan are the oud offerings from Maison Christian Dior; this is the freshest but also the most woody. It starts with a very citrusy and slightly bitter orange paired with a woody oud that resembles vetiver. Then the orange fades and the saffron emerges giving a leather sensation. The pepper is light in the base. It’s based on oud which is what you feel most of the time. It’s elegant has character and is unique despite the similar vibe to others. The orange is bright and energising while the oud is heavy smoky and dark (never animalic but rather woody and mineral). The blend has excellent contrast. It makes me think of a dark green forest on a cloudy day. Lasts 5 to 6 hours with moderate projection at the start.
Undoubtedly one of the best from MCD to buy in 2023. It’s a slightly smoky moist and green oud. Yes it’s OUD not vetiver. I understand that if you know vetiver first you might associate the two but here there is a good oud neither challenging nor animalic. For the archetype (citrusy slightly earthy and smoky) try Terrae Essence by Bvlgari (they don’t smell the same but the construction is similar). At the current boutique price I’m not sure if it’s worth it (overpriced) and they don’t carry the 40ml in Mexico. Performance is 5 to 6 hours with average trail and projection.
A real gem from the Dior line; you can detect the saffron orange and pink pepper. They say it has oud but to me it sounds like leather mixed with vetiver which reminds me a lot of Gucci Guilty Absolute but with better quality and performance. Unfortunately it’s discontinued and with François Demachy leaving Dior it will be harder to find; if you have the chance grab one.
It’s a proper Dior powerhouse where you can really detect saffron, orange, and pink pepper. Although they claim it contains oud, to me it smells like leather blended with vetiver, very similar to Gucci Guilty Absolute but with better quality and performance. Unfortunately, it’s been discontinued, and with François Demachy leaving Dior, it’ll be harder to track down. If you get the chance, grab one.
I’m surprised vetiver isn’t listed in the notes; I smell it intensely. It smells smoky woody warm and earthy. At first there’s a juicy orange but soon the smoke and wood dominate. The oud is perceived with a slight petrol note presumably due to the saffron but it’s quite subtle. For me it’s unisex though more masculine and it has that addictive character that makes you want to smell it constantly. It has good projection and lasts 10-12 hours without fading. Another Dior Privée I liked. Scent 7.5/10 Longevity 10/10 Sillage 8.5/10 Value for money 7/10 Versatility 5/10 Packaging 7/10. Would I buy it again? I didn’t.
Just arrived. What a lovely fragrance. It reminded me of Encre Noir but I also thought of Versace Oud Noir Pour Homme and Agar de Alexandria. The difference is that Purple Oud has a more marked citrus note. At first I thought it was bergamot but the notes say orange; perhaps that’s what I detect. It’s a clean fine and elegant scent. Nothing complicated and lasts more than 10 hours (without exaggerating) obviously closer to the skin for the last 3. Is it worth it? If you like the style of Versace Oud Noir or Encre Noir yes. If you’re a huge fan it’s worth buying. I don’t understand why people say it’s similar to Gucci Guilty Absolute; in my opinion it isn’t.
