Test on a decant first: it smells like an old-money woman. I’m not talking about cash, but upper-class manners. This scent is exclusive to that group, to distinguish themselves from the ‘new rich’ who wear high-impact fragrances so everyone knows they’re new. It’s a reality, not a critique.
My first Valiant tester arrived after years dreaming of this potion at €10 a millilitre and over €1,000 for the bottle. Do gods or Cleopatra smell like this? The answer is brutal: it smells like ‘Dr. No’. If you want to smell like an older, wealthy woman (auntie-style), keep reading. It’s gorgeous but very feminine. After spraying, I thought: I’ve smelled this before! It was Xerjoff’s Opera. On skin, there’s hardly any difference; on paper, nothing. Conclusion: yes, it is floral and celestial, but is it worth the price? No, when you have Opera at a quarter of the cost. I see it for an elegant bride aged 35+ or the bride’s mother in a garden.
If you want to smell like an older, wealthy woman (like your auntie), keep reading. It opens floral (violet, rose, ylang-ylang) with citrus and a powdery touch over a vanilla and creamy sandalwood base. Delicate and polished. Then the citrus fades and the powdery note (iris root) rises to the skin. Elegant sweetness, not dense. Moderate projection, unisex but very feminine. Dry down is exquisite on women. Superior quality to Xerjoff, though the price of $1,200 ($900 today) seems excessive for not feeling quite unique. Best from the English house.
This fragrance needs testing in semi-warm or warm weather with a breeze… it is the most delicious thing I have ever smelled and the quality is worth every penny for longevity and projection.
Inspired by the previous comment, I grabbed a sample on offer. Ideal for those who can’t access certain products or buy blindly. I used a drop before coffee with friends; within an hour, my friend was captivated. My group doesn’t care about perfumery, but the morning turned into a monologue about fragrances. Valiant is bright at first, but at 3–4 hours it explodes with white flowers, iris and sandalwood. Although sweet from tonka, it has masterful elegance. Wearable always. It doesn’t go unnoticed for being eccentric, but for sparking interest when someone else smells it. The high price guarantees exclusivity and it’s a candidate for a signature scent.
I found it at Harrods in October. The girl from Boadicea gifted me 5ml in my bottle. We all have a Holy Grail, a fragrance you search for and once you find it, you stop searching. I found mine in Valiant. I have no words: it is wonderful, comforting and precious. It will be my scent for special occasions: romantic dinners, weekends in Europe or family events. I want it to be my olfactory aurea in the most beautiful moments of my life.
